I am relatively new to Frank Joshua, having recently discovered his work through the great tracks Houston and Shatterproof Glass. After diving into his broader catalogue, it was The Greed and the Hunger that firmly stood out to me, for its great singing, catchy rhythm, and deeply academic undertones.
The Greed and the Hunger begins with a hi-hat over a steady bass kick, establishing a grounded, persistent rhythm that mirrors the initial first-person narrative of the everyman. The opening lines—I’m a normal man, this is my release / I’m in charge of my own life, I consider myself free—present a conscious, seemingly autonomous subject who immediately acknowledges he is constrained by the shackles of deceit. This duality immediately brings to mind the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who summarized this exact human condition in The Social Contract when he wrote, “Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.”
As the arrangement shifts at the chorus, so does the perspective, pivoting sharply into an omniscient third-person narrative. This structural shift acts much like a classic Greek chorus from a play like Sophocles’ Antigone, elevating the song into an academic dialogue regarding nature versus nurture within a good and evil framework. The chorus in Antigone famously observes the terrifying dual nature of humanity: “Numberless are the world’s wonders, but none more wonderful than man… he yields to nothing…“
Joshua’s lyrics introduce the Greed and the Hunger of a normal human mind, suggesting those darker, acquisitive traits are our biological baseline. Yet, trapped within this inherent nature lies the body of an angel, representing a core goodness that is tragically bound and blind.
Joshua explores how the socialization of men—the boy he left to become a man—systematically crushes this innate vulnerability. Here we see the application of John Locke’s theory of the tabula rasa. As Locke argued regarding human nature, “Let us then suppose the mind to be, as we say, white paper void of all characters, without any ideas… To this I answer, in one word, from experience.” The boy begins as a blank slate, but is written upon and ultimately hardened by a harsh world interacting with the prepotent drive(hunger) of greed. The lyric make joy to suffer wherever he can points to this conditioning.
The song posits that without an external moral framework, a man devolves into an island. When Joshua sings, If you can’t understand him, be grateful not to know, it directly subverts the teachings of Socrates, who maintained that “There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance.” Here, ignorance of this dark, inevitable transformation is framed as a fool’s bliss. Ultimately, the song reaches for the kind of tragic weight found in William Shakespeare‘s Hamlet: “What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason… in action how like an angel… and yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?”
Like a tragic figure, the man becomes a traitor to his race, destroying his own angelic empathy to survive.
However, Frank Joshua offers a way out of the trap. It is in feeling. If we can connect and humanize others, then we may be less apt to use them for our own gain. That I think is his point in suggesting ‘If you sneak up softly, you might hear her weep.’
Great, deep songwriter, catchy hook, and beautiful voice. Give it a spin, and stay for the catalogue. They’re all pretty darn good songs.

As the arrangement shifts at the chorus, so does the perspective, pivoting sharply into an omniscient third-person narrative. This structural shift acts much like a classic Greek chorus from a play like Sophocles’ Antigone, elevating the song into an academic dialogue regarding nature versus nurture within a good and evil framework. The chorus in Antigone famously observes the terrifying dual nature of humanity: “Numberless are the world’s wonders, but none more wonderful than man… he yields to nothing…“
Joshua’s lyrics introduce the Greed and the Hunger of a normal human mind, suggesting those darker, acquisitive traits are our biological baseline. Yet, trapped within this inherent nature lies the body of an angel, representing a core goodness that is tragically bound and blind.
Joshua explores how the socialization of men—the boy he left to become a man—systematically crushes this innate vulnerability. Here we see the application of John Locke’s theory of the tabula rasa. As Locke argued regarding human nature, “Let us then suppose the mind to be, as we say, white paper void of all characters, without any ideas… To this I answer, in one word, from experience.” The boy begins as a blank slate, but is written upon and ultimately hardened by a harsh world interacting with the prepotent drive(hunger) of greed. The lyric make joy to suffer wherever he can points to this conditioning.
The song posits that without an external moral framework, a man devolves into an island. When Joshua sings, If you can’t understand him, be grateful not to know, it directly subverts the teachings of Socrates, who maintained that “There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance.” Here, ignorance of this dark, inevitable transformation is framed as a fool’s bliss. Ultimately, the song reaches for the kind of tragic weight found in William Shakespeare‘s Hamlet: “What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason… in action how like an angel… and yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?”
Like a tragic figure, the man becomes a traitor to his race, destroying his own angelic empathy to survive.
However, Frank Joshua offers a way out of the trap. It is in feeling. If we can connect and humanize others, then we may be less apt to use them for our own gain. That I think is his point in suggesting ‘If you sneak up softly, you might hear her weep.’
Great, deep songwriter, catchy hook, and beautiful voice. Give it a spin, and stay for the catalogue. They’re all pretty darn good songs.
